American Holly

Tree Description:

0-021    An American holly (Ilex opaca) has stood as a sentinel at the Monument Avenue entrance for many decades. Being dioecious, these trees are either male or female and only the females (if pollinated by a male) produce the famous red berries. It is one of the few broadleaf evergreen trees that are fully hardy in the Springfield area.
