Butternut

Tree Description:

95-12     Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is a rare species because a fungus blight has killed most of them in their native forests. This specimen was grown from a large cultivated tree in Springfield. The nuts are edible and the husks were used in pioneer times to make a dye – it was used for Confederate uniforms during the Civil War.
