Cucumber Magnolia

Tree Description:

0-003   The Cucumber magnolia (Magnolia acuminata) at the Bell Tower is one of the largest specimens in Springfield and is the only native Illinois magnolia species, found growing wild in Union and Alexander Counties. Its flowers are pale yellow and it bears small, cucumber-like fruit follicles. It probably was one of the earliest flowering trees planted at Oak Ridge, perhaps when the bell tower was built.
