American Sycamores – 0-088

Tree Description:

0-088 - American sycamores (Platanus occidentalis) are found in several places at Oak Ridge, including this tree which was planted as part of a small group. Notice the variable form as you compare it with its neighbors and with others you will see on this tour. Sycamores can reach enormous size and are among the largest trees east of the Mississippi River. Their brilliant white bark and clinging seed balls make them highly ornamental all winter, while their peeling bark and leaf litter present opportunities to rake a lot! They are worth it.
