Bitternut Hickory – 95-19

Tree Description:

95-19 – The Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis) is one of our most common and fast growing of all 10 Illinois Native hickories. Our specimen here, with its typical bitter fruits, was grown from a wild tree located in Block 7, part of the oldest area of Oak Ridge. It is more closely related to pecan that to most of our other native hickories. It typically colors later than many other bitternuts and retains a brilliant yellow well into late fall. This tree has been one of the fastest hickories produced out of more than 700 trees grown in this nursery, so compare its size with the other hickories you see on this tour.
