Tree Description:
95-02a – The black hickory (Carya texana) is uncommon in most of Illinois but thrives in poor soils (sand, rock) where most other trees can’t compete with it. Being very common in Texas, it often is known as Texas hickory, but this one came from the Ozarks in Phelps County, Missouri.. In our area it can be found in the sand prairie are in Mason County and a few similar habitats, and planted seeds will grow in almost any average soil with full sun and good drainage. This is from the same parent tree as 95-02B.
