Black or Texas Hickory – 99-01

Tree Description:

99-01 – Black or Texas Hickory (Carya texana) is a comparatively small forest tree native to harsh, dry sites in southern Illinois, and it creeps north into our area on dry sands and shallow soils over bedrock. It can be found north as far as the Mason County Sands, where this tree was collected as a hickory nut and propagated. It has bright fall color and devotes most of its energy into developing a massive root system that helps it survive the poorest soils and worst droughts we have in this part of the world.
