Tree Description:
96-12 Bur oak trees (Quercus macrocarpa) are native to Oak Ridge. This one was grown from seed collected from the best specimen in the valley west of the Governor Tanner Monument. The parent tree was part of the original forest before Oak Ridge was founded. Bur oak is well adapted to nearly all of the soil conditions found in our area, including very alkaline types, and can be seen on sites ranging from river flood plains to high, dry bluffs. Its corky bark helped it survive fires on the open savannas of pre-settlement central Illinois.
