Tree Description:
95-21a – One of many variants of Bur Oak (Quercus marcrocarpa) seen planted here at Oak Ridge, this one has been designated “Long-Nut” due to the elongated shape of the acorn it came from. Long-Nut was found at Camp Lincoln in the early 1990s and propagated for this unusual characteristic. There are two Long-Nut trees on this tour for you to compare, grown from the same parent. The other one (96-10b) was planted one year later. As you tour the rest of Oak Ridge watch for other bur oaks, and if you find acorns under them compare them as well. Every bur oak tree is different, and much of that difference is due to clinal variation caused by the climates and habitats where they evolved!
