Tree Description:
97-18 – Within the group considered part of the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) species, those from the harsh northwest edges of the natural range have adapted to short, harsh growing seasons by their slow growth and very small acorns. One of those was planted at the Illinois State Museum when it was built in the 1960s and it has remained small, with tiny acorns, revealing its genetic origin. Several F2 (second filial) seedlings were grown from that tree and planted here, and each retains those characteristics to varying degrees but not entirely. This is one of them.
