Tree Description:
.0-071 Other catalpa trees (Catalpa speciosa) can be seen on the east side of Oak Ridge. It is native in southern Illinois, and it can be seen statewide now due to many plantings by pioneer families. This specimen can help explain why it was planted! Look at the base and you will see the original trunk, cut many decades ago, which resulted in a coppice of several new stems which now are much larger than the original tree. Early farmers used this coppicing technique to grow straight sprouts for use in fences and buildings.
