Chinkapin Oak – 97-07

Tree Description:

97-07 – Our local Chinkapin Oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) is not very common as a wild tree in our part of Illinois except in high pH prairie soil areas, but it can be seen elsewhere occasionally and will grow vigorously almost anywhere if planted. It is among our finest trees for shade and wildlife benefit. This specimen came from the ancient tree at the western edge of Cotton Hill Park on Lake Springfield, and you can see another one (from seed collected in a different year) during this tour. If you choose to guess the age of the tree that bore this acorn, don’t count in years, but in centuries.
