Tree Description:
94-03j – This Quercus ×coryana (Cory Oak), derived from Quercus bicolor x Q. muehlenbergii (Swamp White Oak x Chinkapin Oak) was selected from several hybrid trees planted long ago along the western edge of the cemetery in block 43. It is part of a progeny test from a beautiful pyramidal specimen since killed by lightning, and several others have been planted on the grounds. To date we have featured 10 of them in our tours and you can find them in other parts of Oak Ridge by checking previous tours on line. They all are nice trees but if you view each one you will see subtle differences that show why progeny tests are important in selecting the very best tree as a cultivar.
