Tree Description:
94-04c – This Quercus xcoryana (Cory Oak), derived from another Quercus bicolor x Q. muehlenbergii (Swamp White Oak x Chinkapin Oak) near the west edge of Oak Ridge, was selected from several hybrid trees planted long ago in block 43. It is part of a progeny test from a parent tree that is very broad-spreading. Several others have been planted on the grounds in other parts of Oak Ridge. This specimen contrasts sharply with another next to it (94-03j), grown from a very erect, pyramidal parent. They both are nice trees but if you view each one you will see some of the differences in form and foliage that show why progeny tests are important in selecting the very best tree as a cultivar.
