Ironwood

96-04     These 17 Ironwood trees (Ostrya virginiana) were grown in 1995 from seed of the largest specimen in Oak Ridge Cemetery and planted in the Oak Ridge tree nursery in 1996. The original tree probably was a spontaneous native specimen, like a similar one across First Street in Lincoln Park. Both of these beautiful old trees were removed long ago, but you still can see them on pages 286 and 287 of the book Native Trees for North American Landscapes. This row of next-generation trees lives on.

39.819743 N, 89.661047W  (West tree of a row)
