Tree Description:
95-14 – Mockernut Hickory (Carya tomentosa) is a slow-growing and brilliantly coloring nut tree well represented here at Oak Ridge by trees that probably date back to before the Civil War. This specimen was brought in from out of State to compare the subtle differences that might exist between trees from widely separated locations. It was grown from seed collected at the Sternberg Hillview Haven Ranch in Phelps County in central Missouri and planted here in 1995. You might like to look up some of the very old examples of this species from previous tours here and compare them with this one.
