Tree Description:
01-08 – Quercus montana is the currently accepted botanical name for the Rock Chestnut Oak. The tree is very rare in our State and confined to a few groves in the southernmost area of Illinois. But it grows so well here in cultivation that the State Champion of the species is found planted long ago at the old Ostermeier Farm (since 1995 a part of the Lincoln Memorial Garden) in Springfield. This one came from one of the few wild sources in the state, in Alexander County, so it’s a true Illinois native.
