Tree Description:
99-09a – Rock Chestnut Oak (Quercus montana) can be found as one of the most common forest trees in the eastern mountains, having leapt into prominence after the chestnut blight eliminated competition from American chestnut in the early 1900s. It has rugged, fire-resistant bark and loves poor, rocky soil. The seed for this tree came from a high-elevation site on Stone Mountain in Georgia that had a centimeter of soil or less overlying bedrock, with the parent tree’s roots exploring every crack in the volcanic rock to stay alive.
