Salfast Oak – 96-08a

Tree Description:

96-08aQuercus robur var. salicifolia × Q. robur ‘Fastigiata’, or Salfast Oak, is a first generation (F1) hybrid of two European oak selections. When the cross works as hoped, one parent gives it leaves having almost no teeth of lobes, while the other gives it its narrow, upright habit. This tree was propagated from seed taken from the fine willow-leafed oak specimen at the Morton Arboretum, where the fastigiate (upright) male parent grows near enough to pollinate it, giving us this spectacular true F1 hybrid. Salfast oaks are almost never seen in the US, and we hope it will be planted more as people become aware of it.
