Tree Description:
0-106 – We have featured two other large Shingle Oak (Quercus imbricaria) trees and some of their hybrids during previous tours, but this one, with a 14-foot circumference and 110-foot crown spread, might be the largest and healthiest of them all. It is the biggest tree on the 2023 tour and could be more than 100 years old. Shingle oak is unique among local oak species in having leaves that are neither toothed nor lobed. The lower branches do not shed quickly as the tree grows so it makes very knotty lumber, used often in pioneer times for the wooden shingles on log buildings.
