Tree Description:
97-05 – The Shumard Oak (Quercus shumardii) becomes a large, colorful tree across southern Illinois and extending from Texas east throughout the south. There are a few nice specimens planted in Springfield, and this one came from such a planting across form the Lincoln Memorial Garden. It is one of the two species that cross pollinated where there ranges overlap (sympatry) and gave us the smaller, stabilized hybrid Quercus xsternbergii planted elsewhere here at Oak Ridge. Shumard oak and this hybrid (with Quercus buckleyi, also planted here) are among the most tolerant of all red oaks to alkaline soil and they all do well in prairie soils where other oaks usually are limited to bur and chinkapin, both white oaks.
