Tree Description:
00-03b – The unusual Vilmorin’s Hybrid Oak (Quercus ×vilmoriniana) was the first known cross of the Asian Emperor’s Oak Quercus dentata with the European Durmast oak (Quercus petraea). The cross took place by a chance pollination of a solitary Emperor’s Oak at the French National Arboretum des Barres surrounded and pollenated by a natural forest of Durmast Oak. The original tree died from a fungal infection but a few F2 seedlings survive to perpetuate the hybrid. We have three of them here at Oak Ridge, including this one.
