Virgil’s Oak – 99-12a

Tree Description:

99-12a – One of the toughest trees in Europe, the Virgil’s Oak (Quercus virgiliana) has the capacity to survive as a small, contorted tree in sites too poor to support forests of almost any other species. Closely related to pubescent oak, and considered by some to be a variety of it, our Virgil’s Oak was grown from seed collected in some of the most barren areas of the Zemplen Mountains of eastern Hungary. If you look to the southwest into the 2017 tour area you can find its sibling nearby. Both are spectacular in early spring as their colorful wooly leaves unfold.
