Western Chinkapin Oak – 96-15b

Tree Description:

96-15b – This tree is Quercus muehlenbergii var. Brayii, the large-fruited Western Chinkapin Oak. It is a form of our beautiful and adaptable native. This specimen, one of several planted at Oak Ridge, was grown from seed collected in the vicinity of the legendary UFO landing site near Roswell, New Mexico, where it thrives in the alkaline soil that also is found in prairie parts of Springfield. (We are pretty sure it was not brought to Earth by the Roswell aliens, but that might make a good fireside Halloween story!)
